2009 Honolulu

More from Crichton

Honolulu, HI (July 12, 2009) - The Alfa Romeo team is deep in slumber following a press conference and other activities that started at 2:40 am. That is nothing new for the members of the 2008/09 Volvo Ocean Race winning team, Ericsson 4 who were also on this record-setting run. Jimmy Buffett's Restaurant & Bar replenished one and all and gave them plenty of energy for an early morning swim before the revelers piled into a van and headed for breakfast at IHOP.

Elated with the team's record Transpac performance, Neville Crichton provided some more comments on the competing in the Transpacific Yacht Race. Said Crichton, “I have waited 30 years to come back and do the Transpac. The team and I have enjoyed this event at every level, from the welcome we have had from the people running event, as well as the spectators and the public, to the professionalism of the event team, which has been excellent. It has exceeded all our expectations and I am honoured to be added to the winners list – and to have laid down a new challenge for future yachts to try and beat.”

“It was a very good race, no problems, other than having back down to clear litter from the keel and the rudder.”

The highlight of the race according to Crichton, “Crossing the line in Hawaii, winning the race and smashing the race record. Alfa Romeo performed faultlessly, taking everything that the race threw at her in her stride.”

From 1977 to 1982 Crichton was resident in Hawaii, where he was the state representative for Mazda, Ferrari, Jaguar, Porsche, MG and Audi. During this period he also competed in the Clipper Cup, the Kenwood Cup Series and the American Big Boat Series, as well as the Admiral’s Cup in the UK, establishing himself as a highly successful yachtsman.

It was while in Hawaii that he contracted throat cancer and he says that his successful fight against the life-threatening cancer was in part due to his ability to go sailing between bouts of treatment and several times he left hospital early specifically to go sailing around the islands.

Crichton is Governing Director of Ateco Automotive, the Australian and New Zealand importer of Alfa Romeo, Citroën, Fiat, Ferrari and Maserati, as well as the American company, Warn Winches.

Appreciative members of Hawaii's Alfa Romeo Owner's Club whisked Crichton and his crew from their deep draft berth to Waikiki Yacht Club and the first of many Transpac 09 celebrations in Hawaii.
